Three Different Changes to FL Primary Campaigns Gain Momentum

Three Separate Campaigns to Open the Primaries in Florida are gathering Speed.

The All Voters Vote Campaign would establish a Top-Two open Primary by Ballot Initiative Secured enough Petition Signatures to Qualify for Review by the State Supreme Court.

The Campaign was Recently Endorsed by the St. Augustine Record: "If you look at the philosophical chasm between the parties today, we can’t imagine any better news...call it power to the people, rather than power to the party."

What the Amendment does:

- Allows All Voters to Vote in Primary Elections for Legislature, Governor, and Cabinet, regardless of the Political Party Affiliation of the Voter or Candidate.

- Creates a Single Primary for each Office, All Candidates for an Office appear on the Same Ballot, regardless of Party Affiliation.

- Top-Two Voter Getters in the Primary Advance to General Election.

- Prevents Taxpayer Dollars from being used to Fund Elections that Exclude Registered Qualified Voters.

Meanwhile, an Effort by Democratic Party Activists is creating Ripples. Three County Chapters: Brevard, Monroe, and Santa Rosa, recently Passed a Resolution Developed and Passed by the Miami Dade Chapter in March to Not only Open the Democratic Presidential Primaries, but subsequent Primaries as well. It creates a Semi-Closed Primary that allows Independent Voters to Vote in their Party Primaries. The Resolution will have a Final Vote at the Party’s October Convention. A Petition supporting the effort and Targeting Party Leadership has just Launched.

Finally, Florida Fair and Open Primaries has Mobilized over 1,400 Independent Voters to Sign a Letter to the Chairs of the Florida Democratic and Republican Parties urging them to Open their Primaries and create a Semi-Closed Primary system. One Signer said: "I vote for the best candidate available, not the party. It doesn't make sense that I should be prevented from voting in a primary election because I am not affiliated with a party."
