NYC Accelerates Buying Electric Vehicles

When it comes to Electric Vehicles, New York City Mayor and Presidential Candidate Bill de Blasio (D) is Stepping on the Gas.

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) revealed that the City is revving up the Conversion of its Vehicular Fleet to Battery Power.

Having already Surpassed the Mayor's 2015 Goal of replacing 2,000 Gas-Fueled Automobiles with Electric Models, the City is Doubling down and plans to have 4,000 Electric Vehicles by 2025 and to Retire their Carbon Dioxide–Exuding Predecessors.

"It's time to say goodbye to fossil fuels and say hello to an emissions-free future," DCAS Commissioner Lisette Camilo said in a Statement. "The cars we buy directly impact the air we breathe and how we impact our climate. That is why we're shrinking the size of city government's vehicle fleet and using cleaner fueling options."

Camilo's Agency said the 2,200 hard-charging Transports it has Acquired are keeping 9,000 Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide Out of the Atmosphere each year, compared with what Internal-Combustion Engines would be Emitting.

Many are Japanese-Manufactured Sedans and Sport Utility Vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius Prime, the Nissan Leaf, and the Mitsubishi Outlander.

The City also has Purchased Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid-Electric Minivans, one of which has been taking the Mayor to his Gym in Park Slope since January 2019, and General Motors' Crossover Bolt.

These Autos now represent 8.2% of the City's 25,690-strong Fleet.

The Fleet, which has grown substantially during the de Blasio Administration, represents a Small fraction of Vehicles on the Road.

For context, some 2.2 Million Cars are Registered in the Five Boroughs which, together with Vehicles Registered elsewhere, are responsible for 30% of the City's Total Greenhouse-Gas Output.

The Agency said it will look to obtain Plug-In Buses and Trucks in the next Six years, saving roughly 1 Million Gallons of Gasoline Annually.
