Renewable Energy Update 2019

Maryland - Legislators Passed Legislation for 50% Renewables by 2030.

Nevada - Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) to increase the State's Renewable Energy Commitment to 50% by 2030 Unanimously Passed both the State Senate and Assembly.

On April 22nd, Earth Day, Governor Steve Sisolak (D) Signed the Bill into Law.

The Nevada Conservation League (NCL) and LCV's Chispa Nevada Program were Pivotal in the years-long Fight that Culminated this Historic Win, including working in Coalition to help Pass a 50% Clean Energy Ballot Measure in 2018 and investing $4 Million through its Political Action Committee (PAC) to Elect Gov. Sisolak, Protect Clean Energy Majorities in the State Legislature, and Support Conservation Candidates Up and Down the Ballot.

Analyses from the Natural Resources Defense Council and Western Resource Advocates found that the 50% Renewable Portfolio Standard would Reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions 28% by 2030 and, compared to Future Reliance on Gas-Fired Power Plants, could offer Ratepayer Savings exceeding $192 Million over the next Two Decades.

Those targets will drive New Solar and Wind additions to the U.S. Grid. Analysts at Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables Forecast that Nevada’s Law will mean an Additional 4 Gigawatts of Renewables, likely to be mostly Solar, in the State.

New Mexico - Passed a Bill for 100% Zero-Carbon Electricity by 2045.

Puerto Rico - Governor Ricardo Rosselló Signed Legislation calling for 100% Renewables by 2050.

Washington - Advanced Legislation to make the State's Energy Supply 100% Carbon Free by 2045. Washington Conservation Voters (WCV) worked in a Broad and Diverse Coalition to Build Grassroots Support and move the Bill through the Legislature. As a result, Washington has the Strongest Clean Electricity Legislation in the Nation with Landmark Equity Provisions to Require Investments in Communities of Color and Low-Income Residents as well as Policies that tie Labor Standards to Clean Energy Incentives. The Bill will Eliminate Coal Power by 2025 and Transition the State to 100% Clean, Renewable Electricity by 2045. It now goes to Governor Jay Inslee (D) for his expected Signature.
