New Mexico Election Law Bills Advance

On February 18th, Three Election Law Bills Passed the New Mexico House State Government, Elections and Indian Affairs Committee.

All Three now go to the Judiciary Committee.

HB 93 - Primary Election Participation By Dts Voters:

Sponsors: Rep. Daymon Ely (D-23rd District) and Rep. Natalie Figueroa (D-30th District)

Co-Sponsors: Rep. Garratt (D-29th District) and Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-28th District)

It allows voters who have Not designated a Major Political Party Affiliation on their Certificates of Registration to Participate in the Primary Election process by choosing to Affiliate with a major party by Requesting their Ballot. This will switch New Mexico from a Closed Primary to a Semi-Closed Primary State.

HB 407 - Election Laws 50-year Tune-up (The Omnibus Election Law Bill):

Sponsors: Rep. Phelps Anderson (R-66th District) and Rep. Roberto Gonzales (D-42nd District) and

Co-Sponsor: Rep. Linda Trujillo (D-48th District)

Joint Sponsor: Sen. Daniel Ivey-Soto (D-15th District)

It includes Lowering the Signature Requirement for Independent Candidates from 3% of the last Gubernatorial Vote, to 2%.

HB 425 - Presidential Elector Disqualification:

Sponsor: Rep. Matthew McQueen (D-50th District)

It Requires Presidential Electors who do Not vote for the Candidate of the Political Party that Nominated them to be Disqualified and the Vacancy filled by Gubernatorial Appointment.
