The Florida Constitution Revision Commission, which happens every 20 years, asked Open Primaries Activists to present their Case in support of Commissioner William “Bill” Schifino Jr.’s, a Tampa Attorney and 2016-2017 President of The Florida Bar, Proposal.

Out of more than 2,000 Proposals submitted to Florida’s Constitutional Review Commission after hearings held across the State, the Open Primaries Referendum was one of Six Proposals selected for consideration.

Steve Hough, Director of Florida Fair and Open Primaries and Jeremy Gruber, SVP of Open Primaries travelled to Tallahassee to share why Opening up Florida’s Closed Primaries would be good for the Voters and the State.

The Commission is currently debating the Measure, which would allow Florida’s 3.4 Million Independent Voters, registered as “no party affiliated” (NPA) Voters in Florida, to Pick a Party Ballot in the Primary Election. If the Majority of the Commission supports it, the Proposal will head to the 2018 Ballot, where it will need Approval by 60% of Voters.

In a recent Poll 70% of Floridians supported Open Primaries, including Majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. 27% of Florida Voters are Independents that cannot Vote in Taxpayer Funded Primary Elections. Florida is one of only Nine States with completely Closed Primaries.

Voters have other Mechanisms to put the Proposal on the Ballot, but the Commission would provide the Quickest and Easiest Opportunity to do so in time for the 2020 Presidential Primaries.
