NY Bans State Agencies from Questioning Immigration Status

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has Signed an Executive Order Prohibiting State Agencies or State Officers from Inquiring About or Sharing a Person's Immigration Status.

Under the New Rule, the State Police and other State Law Enforcement Agencies will not be allowed to Ask about a Person's Right to be in the Country when they're the Victim of a Crime or a Witness.

It also means State Agencies won't be able to Share a Person's Immigration Status with Federal Authorities, except in certain Situations such as a Law Enforcement Investigation.

Cuomo, a Democrat, issued the Executive Order today.

He says that as Leaders in Washington "squabble" over Immigration Reform, New York is taking Action to protect New Yorkers of all Backgrounds from what he calls "Unwarranted" targeting by Government.

The other issue is the WALL. When many of the Undocumented Immigrants came here by staying over their Visa Expiration Date, how is the BIG WALL going to stop this?

Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard issued a Directive today telling Law Enforcement Personnel to continue Asking People about their Immigration Status during Traffic Stops, Arrests, and Domestic Incidents. The Directive came just a few hours after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued his Executive Order.

"Our officers have sworn a solemn oath to uphold the law," said Sheriff Howard in a Statement released to the Media. "Today, I have instructed my Deputies to continue enforcing the law, irrespective of Governor Cuomo's executive order.”

The directive by Sheriff Howard Orders Law Enforcement to Inquire about the Immigration Status of People Under Investigation. Howard says the Directive Falls in Line with the Policy set by the Federal Government. "There is no duty more important than protecting our citizens and upholding the rule of law," said Howard. "As Sheriff, part of my job is enforcing our constitution and the law, regardless of what cheap political points Albany politicians are looking to score."
