Presidential Campaign Boosts NY Voter Enrollment Nearly 7%

The Presidential campaign drove more New Yorkers to register to vote.

Newly released figures from the State Board of Elections show voter enrollment in New York jumped nearly 7% from a year ago, with Democrats accounting for a slight majority of the new registrations.

“An open seat, hotly contested presidential race generates the most interest,” said Blair Horner of the New York Public Interest Research Group.

As of Nov. 1, New York State had 11.4 million active voters, up 740,222 or 6.9% from the same date a year ago.

Voter registration in the City jumped 8.9% to 4.48 million active voters.

Democratic enrollment across the State increased by 383,965 to 5.6 million active voters, according to the Board’s figures.

Republican enrollment increased by 107,575 to 2.6 million voters.

This year’s increase eclipsed the 5.9% increase in statewide voter enrollment seen during the most recent open contest for the White House in 2008.
