Professor of mechanical engineering at Bicol University's College of Engineering Mary Joy Mandane-Ortiz deemed the concept very effective. It was used by hundreds of college students in the third week of October for their midterm exams. According to Prof. Mandane-Ortiz, the original assignment required pupils to create a "basic" paper design.

Her idea was sparked by a method that has been in use in Thailand for quite some time. A photo purportedly taken in a classroom at a university in Bangkok in 2013 showed pupils taking exams with "ear flaps," or pieces of paper taped to the sides of their heads to block out light.

Professor Mandane-Ortiz reported that her student engineers seized upon the opportunity, with some creating sophisticated new helmet designs in "five minutes" using whatever discarded materials they could find.

To complete the task, others wore caps, helmets, or Halloween masks. Over the course of a few days, the professor's Facebook posts featuring the students in their elaborate costumes earned thousands of likes and coverage from Filipino media sites. Reports say they have prompted students at other institutions and colleges to try making their own versions of anti-cheating hats.

Professor Mandane-Ortiz claimed that her students had improved in performance this year due to their having been inspired to work harder by the rigorous testing procedures. She also mentioned that several of them completed the exams early and that nobody was caught cheating this year.
