Every year around this time, Buddhists in Melaka from all all walks of life will be congregating at Seck Kia Eenh Temple to kickstart our annual Wesak Day Procession. Also known as Vesak, on this special day Buddhists come together to celebrate Buddha's Birth, Enlightenment and Death.  Hence it is a very, very special day for all of us. For the more pious Buddhists,the day will begin with meditation on the precepts of Buddhism. We will also give donations and of course pray. However the highlight of Wesak Day is the procession whereby thousands of Buddhists will go on a spiritual journey to help us cherish life and know that everything is temporary. The procession will usually begin at around 7p.m. but make sure that you arrive earlier as many streets will be closed for the procession. The parade will see many devotees holding flowers and lighted joss stick while accompanying beautiful decorated floats to walk around the city. Together with the mounted sacred Buddha statues, we will begin our walk. Along the route, there will be many other devotees who line either sides of the street to offer their prayers.

Our family especially Jordan boy and Jasmine girl love to look at the beautiful floats and the Buddha statues as they have this unspoken calming effects on us. Lasting for several hours, this procession ends with prayers at the Seck Kia Eenh Temple. We will then walk around in the temple to pray. Our 2 babies really love this annual prayers of ours. A lot of devotees will remain in the temple and pray until the next morning to give thanks to Buddha, which we of course could not join.

Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 pandemic this year (2020), Wesak Day procession in Melaka has to be cancelled as we observe social distancing in an attempt to curb the spread of the highly contagious virus. I am sure that Buddha Himself wants us to stay indoors to contain the virus and limit its damaging effects. As the saying goes no matter where you are, God is close to you and He can be in your heart to guide you and love you. Anyway Happy Wesak Day to everyone who is celebrating and observing this meaningful and important day with your family, loved ones and friends.
