A Hulu series called Cold Case Files: DNA Speaks explores cold cases that have been solved thanks to advances in DNA. Interviews with the victims’ families, close friends, law enforcement, and the general public are conducted. Mary Scott, 23, was brutally murdered in one of the episodes.

After more than 50 years, the case was eventually solved thanks to forensic genealogy and DNA analysis.

Who is John Sipos, and what did he do?

After leaving the Navy, former Navy sailor John Sipos lived in San Diego just a few miles from Mary Scott, where he killed her. John killed the victim when he was in his 20s.

Sipos, a Pennsylvania native, was detained on October 24, 2020, while residing in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania.

He reportedly shared a retirement home with his wife of 20 years.

How did Mary Scott die?

Go-go dancer Mary Scott, age 23, was discovered strangled to death in her San Diego apartment in November 1969. Mary was raped repeatedly before she was killed by being strangled. The murderer broke down the door to her flat. During the scuffle, they allegedly reportedly shattered her jaw. Their initial suspect was her ex-husband, who was swiftly exonerated since forensic evidence wasn’t as sophisticated as it is now.

Mary Scott was raised in Clairemont, California, along with her three brothers and two sisters. Mary wed Patrick Wyble, a Navy sailor from Opelousas, Louisiana, in 1963. The couple produced two daughters. Mary moved back to Clairemont after their divorce because their marriage didn’t last. When Scott was killed, her daughters were not housed with her.

She was unable to witness the conviction of her mother’s killer because one perished in a vehicle accident in 1993.

John was given a sentence of seven years to life in jail even though the statute of limitations had long before expired and he could not have been found guilty of rape. At the California State Prison in Corcoran, the 77-year-old is completing his term of imprisonment. He would be eligible for parole in February 2024, according to his prison records.

How long will John Sipos be in prison for?

DNA found at the crime scene helped to identify Sipos as the murderer. 51 years after the crime was perpetrated, in October 2020, Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, police in San Diego reported the arrest of Sipos. The case went to trial in March 2022 after John entered a not guilty plea. The 77-year-old former Navy sailor who killed Mary Scott with great brutality received a sentence of 7 years to life in prison.

Authorities used forensic genealogy, sometimes known as genetic genealogy, which links suspects to prospective relatives using consumer DNA databases utilizing genetic information.

Many more convictions resulted from this, including the infamous Golden State Killer.

He was eligible for the harshest sentence possible at the time of the killing, which was a seven-year to life sentence in a state prison. In 2024, he will be able to apply for parole.
