Tragedy of the Commons

Tags: common farmer

I would like to sidetrack from the main objective of this blog and tell you about the phycology behind it.

The reason why not many people are trying to save the Earth is because of the thing called 'Tragedy of the Commons'. You can either watch this video here or read the following (If you watched the video, skip to paragraph 5):

Imagine there is this land called 'The Commons'. As this land is free, no one really owns it. 4 farmers come by, bringing 1 cow each. The cows are able to graze in 'The Commons'. One farmer suddenly came with an idea that if he brought 1 more cow, he would earn more money! So, he got 1 more cow. The other farmers realize that he was earning more money with more cows, so the other farmers also brought more cows. Soon, 'The Commons' is overpopulated with cows and there is no more grass to grow before it is eaten by the cows, causing 'The Commons' to be unable to sustain cows and the cows will die, assuming the cows are not brought somewhere else.

Now, imagine that 'The Commons' is Earth. You see what is the analogy? Soon, the Earth will be unable to sustain life.

Why a farmer doesn't try to stop the other farmers is because he knows that if he doesn't successfully ago the other farmers, they will use up 'The Commons' anyways, with or without that farmer, which is why no one tries to stop the others. Selfishness.

I hope that you will do something to help the environment and remember the poll in the 'Welcome' post.
