What is antisemitism? Well, here are 11 examples

Antisemitism is on the rise globally and it’s an alarming phenomenon.

In 2019 alone, as a global community, we’ve witnessed a rise in online abuse, antisemitic incidents in schools and repeated attacks both on synagogues and Jewish cemeteries.

Here in the UK for example, antisemitic incidents have been increasing year on year since 2015. Online incidents, in particular, have contributed to an increase of antisemitic incidents being reported to Community Security Trust – the UK’s antisemitism reporting and monitoring body.

And it doesn’t stop with the United Kingdom. More widely across Europe and the USA, the alarming rise of antisemitism is something that needs to be tackled head-on.

In a survey undertaken by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) back in 2018, 85% of respondents considered antisemitism to be a “serious problem“. With attacks on Jewish cemeteries in Denmark and France, as well as the tragic Halle shooting in Germany – all taking place the following year in 2019 – things are clearly not improving.

Over the pond in the USA, research undertaken into the levels of antisemitism in 2018 worldwide also showed that over a quarter of antisemitic attacks had taken place in the USA. Having likewise just marked one year since the horrific attack on the Chabad of Poway synagogue in April 2019, as a global community we need to keep raising awareness and calling out antisemitism wherever and whenever we see it.

Whatever our background, it’s critical that we know how antisemitism manifests itself. That way we can better recognise it, report it and call it out.

We’ve therefore put together a video with 11 examples of antisemitism using the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism. Take a look and please do share to help spread the message.

It’s vital that we all understand what antisemitism is, how it’s presented and how it’s used to sadly demonise an entire group of people.

We must call out all forms of hate and this critically includes antisemitism. Please take action today and help us all #BeLouder in the fight against antisemitism.

Take action:

Take action against antisemitism by helping in the following ways:

    • Education: Share our video with your friends, family and networks to help spread the message loudly and clearly
    • Reporting: If you witness antisemitic behaviour online or offline, report each incident to relevant bodies and platforms such as the CST (UK),  Twitter authorities, Facebook admins etc.
    • Research: If you’re Muslim and have previously expressed antisemitic views, take part in our research on antisemitism in the UK

Remember: together we’re stronger!
