On Tuesday, Facebook confirmed it would launch a digital global currency similar to Bitcoin, called Libra.

Libra is being touted as a means to connect people who do not have access to traditional banking platforms.

Facebook and its partners are backing Libra with a pool of real-world money, promising users that they will always be able to trade the cryptocurrency in for cash.
