Juan Williams, an author and political analyst for Fox News, wrote a very interesting op-ed for The Hill in which he posits that President Trump is being used by the GOP establishment. In his piece, Williams makes a very compelling argument for his view. He cites the recent tax bill in his article when he writes:
“The real problem is that tax cuts for the rich are not what candidate Trump promised his populist supporters. Trump said he was going to raise taxes on the rich and eliminate deductions that favored the investor class, while cutting taxes on the middle class. He also said he was going to end the carried interest deduction that allows hedge fund millionaires to pay at a lower tax rate than working-class Americans. The bill Trump signed does the exact opposite. It gives a big tax cut to the rich and allows the carried interest deduction to remain.”
Williams also points to three other things the establishment has long wanted to accomplish that they finally did under Trump, “Firstly, allowing drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve; secondly, repealing the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act; and thirdly, pushing poorly qualified but pro-business and anti-regulation judges onto federal courts.” Williams’ piece makes one wonder if he is right that the GOP establishment is using President Trump?
ABC News covering the Republican agenda for 2018:
Is the GOP establishment using President Trump? Have they kept him in office so they can get whatever they want signed into law without worrying about a veto? Or, is President Trump his own man who cannot be controlled by anyone?
