Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is moving ahead with his plan to require all able-bodied adults to be screened and then possibly Drug tested to receive food stamps. The governor has indicated that this is to help with a worker shortage in Wisconsin and to continue with welfare reform. This plan was included by the state legislature and the governor in the 2015-17 budget. Wisconsin then tried to sue the federal government in 2015 to prevent it from blocking the plan. The lawsuit was thrown out in the fall of 2016 because it hadn’t started yet.

Under the plan, you would have to fill out a questionnaire and then, depending on your answers, you would possibly have to take a drug test. If you test positive, you would have to undergo treatment to be eligible for benefits. If you are childless and can’t afford the treatment, you could be eligible for state funded rehabilitation. With this plan moving forward, a question comes to mind. Should people be required to take a drug test to receive state benefits?

Should people be required to take a drug test to receive state benefits? Is this a good way to make sure our tax dollars are put to good use? Or, is drug testing poor people just plain wrong?
