Why is it so insane that Boris is the new foreign secretary?

Let me just start by predicting that this can only end in disaster. In the future, I’ll point back to this post and say “hate to say I told you so” to anyone who thinks this is an acceptable idea.

So Boris Johnson, the guy who acts silly and admits that it’s all just that, an act, is now the UK’s foreign secretary. He’s not just some “harmless” racist in the pub, he’s actually in charge of our foreign affairs at a time when we need tact, diplomacy and understanding.

As a case study, let’s see what Boris has to say on the subject of Africa, a huge, varied continent which was colonised by many different countries, one of which being Britain. No one can pretend that we weren’t unfair and in it for our own gain. Anyway, back to Boris on Africa.

“Africa is a mess, but we can’t blame colonialism”

“The problem is not that we were once in charge, but that we are not in charge any more”.

“The best fate for Africa would be if the old colonial powers, or their citizens, scrambled once again in her direction; on the understanding that this time they will not be asked to feel guilty.”

I’m sure at this point you’re wondering if this is real life, if he truly said those things or if I’m just making this up. It’s tragic and unbelievable, but no I’m not making anything up. This is real. Really real.
