Benefits of Building a Raised Bed with Legs

Before we discuss how to build a raised bed with legs, let’s talk about what makes these raised beds so special. Raised bed gardening’s popularity is on the rise due to the many benefits that they provide.

  • The height of the raised bed with legs limits bending and backaches.
  • The closed bottom and off-the-ground design protect your garden from ground squirrels, rabbits, moles, groundhogs, and gophers.
  • Wheels on the raised bed with legs provide gardeners with mobility, allowing you to move the plants to areas of your property for optimal growing.
  • A raised bed with legs allows you to control the soil in the garden, which helps you grow successfully no matter how poor your native soil is.
  • The soil in a raised bed with legs warms up faster than in-ground gardens, allowing for extended planting seasons and faster germination.
  • You can plant more in raised beds and grow more in a more contained space than in traditional in-ground garden beds.

Raised Bed Build Considerations

When thinking about how to build a raised bed with legs, there are some key considerations before you get started:

  • As you build your raised bed with legs, ensure that the legs are affixed so that they are sturdy and durable to accommodate the weight of the soil that will be added.
  • This project included wheels for easy mobility of the raised bed with legs. Be sure to choose sturdy wheels that have a locking mechanism if possible.
  • Corrugated metal is floppy and requires framing with wood for it to hold its shape. Secure them with truss screws.
  • Use zinc screws to avoid rusting of hardware.
  • Build a smaller, more manageable raised bed to make it sturdier so that the sides do not bow with the addition of soil and water. Bridget and Evan had success with a sturdy 5′ by 2′ bed.
  • Use 45-degree angles on the corners for a nice clean look.
  • Use wood glue before screwing in the joints so that water doesn’t seep into the seams and cause rot over time.
  • If you plan to make more than one bed, do all of your cutting at one time to save time.
  • Use untreated wood for organic gardening. You can find plywood that doesn’t have formaldehyde glue for the bottom.
  • Seal your wood with raw linseed oil to further protect it.
  • You may consider making a couple of drainage holes in the bottom of your raised bed with legs if your raised bed will have access to lots of heavy rain.
  • Water will drain from a raised garden bed with legs. Ensure there is a tray underneath to catch the drainage, especially if the raised bed is not outdoors.
