Pakistan government says former Prime Minister Imran Khan found guilty of masterminding May 9 attacks

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been found “guilty of inciting attacks” on military installations, including the Lahore Corps Commander House.

However, the ATC Lahore extended Khan’s pre-arrest bail in five terrorism cases until August 8.

“A special prosecutor told the ATC on Friday that a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) of the Punjab Police has completed its investigation into the May 9 attacks on military and state buildings and found Imran Khan guilty of complicity and other terrorism charges,” a court official told PTI.

Khan appeared in court under high security.

Prosecutor Farhad Ali Shah said Khan is guilty of masterminding the May 9 attacks and his arrest is needed for evidence gathering.

He said that before the May 9 attacks, the Pakistani chief of Tehreek-e-Insaf had led a campaign inciting party workers against the army. That incitement led to the attack on the military installations, he said.

ATC Judge Abher Gul Khan extended Khan’s pre-arrest bail until August 8 and instructed the prosecution to present more arguments at the next hearing.

Following the arrest of Imran Khan by paramilitary Rangers, unrest broke out in Pakistan on 9 May, with dozens of military and state buildings burned and destroyed, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad.

Police have arrested more than 10,000 PTI workers and more than 100 are being tried under the army law.

Khan denied masterminding or inciting the attacks and stated that it was a well-planned conspiracy to oust his party from the upcoming election.

The military establishment managed to pull two political parties – Istekham-i-Pakistan Party and PTI MPs – out of the PTI as dozens of leaders joined the new parties.
