Tax evasion of 9,000 crores by Chinese mobile companies, IT minister gave information in Rajya Sabha

Chinese mobile companies: Chinese smartphone makers including Oppo Mobile, Vivo India and Xiaomi Technology have been caught evading tax worth Rs 9,000 Crore in India. The House of Representatives was informed about this on Friday. State Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar gave this information in written response to questions in the Rajya Sabha.

He said tax evasion of about Rs 9,000 crore including customs duty and GST has been detected between fiscal years 2018-19 and 2022-23. The government recovered Rs 1,629.87 crore from the companies during this period. According to government records, Oppo Mobile India Pvt Ltd is said to have evaded a tax of Rs 5,086 crore including Rs 4,403 crore as customs duties and Rs 683 crore in GST head.

According to Chandrasekhar’s written reply, Vivo has evaded tax of Rs 2,923.25 crore, which includes Rs 2,875 crore in customs duties and Rs 48.25 crore in GST. Tax evasion of Rs 851.14 crore has been discovered in the case of Xiaomi Technology India Pvt Ltd, including Rs 682.51 crore in customs duties and Rs 168.63 crore in GST.

Chandrasekhar said that in the case of Oppo Mobile India Pvt Ltd, customs duty evasion of Rs 4,389 crore was detected in FY 2019-2020, of which Rs 450 crore has been recovered. Vivo India Mobiles Pvt Ltd was found for evading customs duties of Rs 2,217 crore, of which Rs 72 crore has been recovered in FY 2020-21.

In FY 2019-20, Xiaomi Technology India Pvt Ltd was found for evading customs duties of Rs 653.02 crore, of which Rs 46 lakh has been recovered. In FY 2022-23, Vivo Mobile India Pvt Ltd was found stealing Rs 658 crore.

According to government records, Lenovo has evaded GST of Rs 42.36 crore. According to the records, the government has been able to recover Rs 1,214.83 crore from Oppo, Rs 168.25 crore from Vivo and Rs 92.8 crore from Xiaomi. The minister was asked how many Chinese mobile phone companies have evaded taxes and sent money illegally to India.

Chandrashekhar said the cumulative revenue of Chinese mobile phone companies in India is estimated at Rs 1.5 lakh crore in FY 2021-22. The minister said these companies have directly created more than 75,000 jobs. They also have about 80,000 employees involved in sales and operations. (Language)
