Delhi rain breaks record of 42 years, 153 mm of rain in 24 hours

Delhi Rain: The Rain in Delhi broke the record of 42 years. The national capital recorded 153mm of rain in a 24-hour period ending Sunday at 8:30am, the highest in a single day in July since 1982.

A westerly disturbance and monsoon winds have battered northwestern India with heavy downpours, and Delhi has recorded its first “extremely heavy downpour” of the season, according to the IMD.

The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 153mm of rain in the past 24 hours up to 8:30am on Sunday, the highest since July 25, 1982 when it recorded 169.9mm in a single day, an IMD official said.

The city recorded 133.4 mm of precipitation on July 10, 2003 and the highest ever rainfall of 266.2 mm was recorded on July 21, 1958.

Roads became ponds: Due to the heavy rainfall, several areas, underpasses, markets and even hospital grounds in the city were flooded and roads were badly clogged.

Photos and videos of people wading through knee-deep water on the street went viral on social media forums and raised questions about the city’s drainage infrastructure. Electricity and internet were also affected by high winds and rain in many areas.

Officer’s leave revoked: Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal has canceled all officers’ leave due to continued rain in Delhi. All ministers, mayors and civil servants will continuously evaluate the situation in Delhi.

Yellow alarm on Sunday: The Meteorological Department has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for moderate rain in Delhi. Ridge, Lodhi Road and Delhi University weather stations recorded 134.5mm, 123.4mm and 118mm of rain respectively.

Precipitation below 15mm is “light,” 15mm to 64.5mm is “moderate,” 64.5mm to 115.5mm is “heavy,” and 115.6mm to 204.4mm is “very heavy,” according to the weather bureau. . At the same time, when more than 204.4 mm of rain is recorded, it is kept in the category of ‘extremely heavy’ rain.
