Writing | China’s base on Cocos Island, India must be cautious

Trickster China is not only still a huge threat to our country, but other countries in the world are also shocked by his antics. In view of the danger from China, the organization of 4 countries (India, America, Japan and Australia) Quad was formed. China has kept several South Asian countries in its clutches by extending loans and capturing their resources. Opposite is the example of Sri Lanka, which has been ruined by China. Hambantota in Sri Lanka and the port of Gwadar in Pakistan are occupied by China. It also keeps the pressure on Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh. China is also in cahoots with the Myanmar military government. By giving billions of rupees to Myanmar, China has built a huge monitoring center on the Cocoa Islands located in the Bay of Bengal. From there, China can easily track Indian missiles launched from the Balasore proving ground in Odisha, as well as strategic assets located on the east coast city of Visakhapatnam. The Chinese military has built a naval base at Ramavilli, 50 km from Visakhapatnam, from where it can monitor the movement of India’s nuclear submarines. China has been active in this direction for several decades. George Fernandes, who was defense minister in the Vajpayee government, first raised the issue of Chinese surveillance on Cocoa Island. George considered China to be India’s number 1 enemy. India raised the issue of Cocos Island with the Myanmar government led by General Min Aung Hlaing, but the junta denied that China has built any runway extensions, shelters, monitoring stations or infrastructure built there. On the contrary, information from national security experts and satellite images shows that the runway has been extended for the flight from Isla del Coco. Apart from this, new sheds or barracks have been built for about 1,500 soldiers, including the Chinese living on the island. Earlier, a Chinese spy ship had camped in Hambantota, Sri Lanka, to reconnoitre Indian military bases. China had also sent its large spy balloon into US airspace, so a lot of tension had arisen. Later that balloon was destroyed. Despite being the world’s second largest economy, China used to borrow from the World Bank and IMF at low interest rates by calling itself a developing nation. Now the United States has stripped China of developing country status. This has angered China. Nor will it receive financial aid from the World Trade Organization.
