Different communities in India have different laws regarding marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption depending on their religion, faith and beliefs.

However, since the country’s independence, the demand for the Uniform Civil Code or Uniform Civil Code has been underway. Under this, there will be a single law that will not care about any religion, gender and sexual orientation.

Even the constitution says that the nation should ‘endeavour’ to provide such laws to its citizens. But both the Hindu majority and the country’s Muslim minority have been criticizing the uniform law.

The BJP government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is backing down on this idea. BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are discussing UCC.
