Washington. The United States said Tuesday it is closely monitoring the emergency landing of an Air India flight bound for San Francisco in Russia. Air India had said in a statement on Tuesday night that Air India Flight Aei-173 had left Delhi for San Francisco on June 6, when it was reported that there was a technical failure in one of the plane’s engines. The statement said there were 216 passengers and 16 crew members on board the plane and it landed safely at Magadan airport in Russia.
US State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel told the daily press briefing: “We have received information about an emergency landing in Russia reaching the United States. We are closely monitoring the situation. I can’t say about the number of American citizens on board at this time,” he said in response to a question: “This was a flight coming to the United States, so surely American citizens will also be on board. Air India has reportedly said that it will send another plane to take the passengers to their destination, but I wish the airline would not say anything more about it.
