New Delhi: The government is going to launch a tracking system this week. Through this system, people across the country will be able to ‘lock’ or track their lost or stolen Mobile phones. A senior government official gave this information. Technology development body Center for Development of Telematics (CDOT) is running the Central Equipment Identity Registration (CEIR) system on a trial basis in some telecom circles including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka and North East region. An official from the Department of Telecommunications told PTI-language that now this system can be launched at the entire level of India.

“The CEIR system will be rolled out across India on May 17,” the official said. When contacted, CDOT CEO and Project Board Chairman Rajkumar Upadhyay would not confirm the date, but said the technology is ready to roll out across India. Upadhyay said, “The system is ready and will now be rolled out across India this quarter.

This will allow people to lock and track their lost Mobile Phones. CDOT has added new features to track the use of cloned cell phones across all telecommunications networks. The government has made it mandatory to disclose the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI-15 digit number) before the sale of mobile devices in India.

Mobile networks will have a list of approved IMEI numbers to detect unauthorized entry of mobile phones into their network. Telecommunications operators and the CEIR system will have access to the IMEI number of the device and the mobile number associated with it. In some states, this information will be used through CEIR to track lost or Stolen Mobile Phones. (agency)
