malappuramAccording to the ANI news agency, at least 16 people were killed when a tourist boat sank off the coast of Tanur district of Kerala on Sunday. The incident took place near Tanur in Malappuram, Kerala. Kerala Minister V Abdul Rahman gave this information.
Police said that according to preliminary information received from the crash site, there were around 25 passengers on board the ship, of whom 16 have died, while other passengers have been admitted to nearby public and private hospitals. He said the incident occurred around 7 p.m.

The police also reported that rescue operations are underway with several ambulances, fire personnel and volunteer workers. He said the cause of the accident has yet to be determined and efforts are being made to bring the sunken ship to shore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the relatives of the deceased.
In a tweet, the PMO said: “Saddened by the loss of life due to the ship accident in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to each of PMNRF’s deceased to their closest relatives.
