A collapsed parking lot in Manhattan, New York
One person was killed and five others injured after a parking garage collapsed in lower Manhattan, a New York City official said. After the accident, many people were trapped in the rubble of the building, while dozens of vehicles were also destroyed.
Rescue with the help of a robot dog and a drone
Drone photos showed the garage collapsed like a “pancake,” Acting Building Commissioner Kazimir Vilenchik said, according to CNN. New York Mayor Eric Adams told the media that the New York Fire Department (FDNY) used a robot dog and a drone to search for people inside the building because it is “completely unstable.” CNN quoted FDNY Fire Chief of Operations John Esposito as saying, “We’re trying to make sure no one gets trapped in the rubble.”
Only 3-story building on government records
Only 3-story building on government records
The multi-story parking garage is reportedly just a few buildings from City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge, and about half a mile (0.8 km) from the New York Stock Exchange. The garage suddenly collapsed around 4 p.m. Surprisingly, New York City Department of Buildings records show that this three-story building has been a garage since at least the 1920s, and no new construction permits have been issued recently. In such a situation, the question arises as to how the three-story building turned into a 4-story building on record.
