Oil used during the official coronation of Britain’s King Charles on May 6 has been consecrated in a ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. Buckingham Palace released this information on Saturday. The 74-year-old monarch’s head, chest and hands will be symbolically anointed with holy oil as part of a religious ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London during Charles III’s formal coronation. His wife Camila will also be anointed as queen with the same sacred oil.

The palace said the holy oil was made from two trees cut from the Mount of Olives at the Mary Magdalene Monastery and the Ascension Monastery in West Asia. According to information provided by Buckingham Palace, this sacred oil is scented with sesame, rose, jasmine, cinnamon, neroli, guggul and trinmani oils.

The consecration of the oil was performed by His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos-III, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, and the Anglican Archbishop of Jerusalem, the Most Reverend Hosam Naum, in a ceremony held in Jerusalem on Friday. The ‘Church of the Holy Sepulchre’ is considered one of the holiest Christian sites in the world. As part of his choice of oil, the Maharajah chose an animal-free option in keeping with his environmental concerns and unlike oils used in previous coronations. Buckingham Palace expects thousands of people to visit the UK capital to experience the unique and historic occasion, which will be viewed by millions across the UK and around the world.
