Epic Infocus 1 Review
InFocus introduced low-cost Android smartphones under the Bingo brand earlier this year. These include Bingo 10 (Review) and Bingo 50 (Review). The performance of these smartphones was not very good as compared to other smartphones available in the market. The new Infocus Epic 1 is the latest smartphone from the company and it packs a deca-core chip along with a great camera which is one of the highlights of the device. Can the InFocus Epic 1 compete with the popular Moto G4 Plus and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 in the sub-Rs 15,000 segment?

Infocus Epic 1 design and appearance
The InFocus Epic 1 has a display at the front with a 5.5-inch screen. Corning Gorilla Glass has been provided for screen protection on the phone. The phone has a round earpiece, which gives the phone a glimpse of the Nextbit Robin smartphone. Apart from this, the phone has all the standard sensors including the front camera. The smartphone uses on-screen navigation buttons, which means that there is a lot of space left under the screen.

The power and volume buttons are on the right side of the phone, while the hybrid SIM tray is on the left side. The phone has a USB Type-C port at the bottom. There is a speaker grill near him. The Epic 1 has an IR blaster on top, which can double as a remote. Other than this, there is also a 3.5mm audio jack at the top.

The Epic 1 brushed metal back of this smartphone gives a premium look to the phone. And due to its curved shape, the grip on the headset is good. There is a circular fingerprint sensor under the camera lens. At the bottom is the InFocus logo. Weighing in at 160 grams, the Epic 1 feels neither too light nor too heavy. It is convenient to use the phone even with one hand. At 8.4mm thick, the Epic 1 feels thinner than other smartphones in this price range.

Our review unit did not come in a retail box. But the customer will get a charger along with the user manual, earphones and USB Type-C cable in the box when buying this phone. In general, the design and appearance of the Epic 1 are much better than other smartphones offered by Infocus.

Infocus Epic 1 Specifications and Software
Dual SIM Infocus Epic 1 has a Deca-Core MediaTek Helio X20 (MT6797M) processor. This phone has 3 GB of RAM. The built-in storage is 32GB, which can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card.

This phone has a 5.5-inch Full HD (1080×1920 pixels) LTPS display equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass. The smartphone sports a 16-megapixel camera with F/1.8 aperture, dual-tone LED flash, PDAF, and auto image stabilization. While the front camera is an 8-megapixel camera with an 82-degree wide-angle lens and an F/1.8 aperture.

This phone has a 3000 mAh non-removable battery and supports fast charging. In addition to 4G VoLTE, other connectivity features on the Epic 1 include Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and GPS/A-GPS.

The phone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with the company’s InLife UI skin on top. InFocus has been touting itself as a differentiation from other Chinese smartphone brands, but with the raw interface, it seems to be just fine. The Epic 1 lacks many of Marshmallow’s visual features, which we covered in our Bingo 50 review. The icons, in particular, look quite old.

InFocus has made some changes to its InLife user interface. The app drawer has also been removed, meaning all app icons now appear on the home screen. A unique new feature has been added that puts the most used and most recent apps in the Applications folder. This saves time spent searching for an app while using it. The quick settings panel also looks outdated with old animations, but users can rearrange it by toggling here.

Your smartphone comes with Launcher+ and EZ Launcher by default. Even before this, we’ve seen these features on InFocus smartphones. And it provides a simple interface for first time smartphone users.

infocus epic 1 performance
Infocus Epic 1 is the best performing device in this price range. During our review, we did not find any issues or flaws with this phone. We found that 1.2 GB of memory was free even while using the phone, so the overall response of the phone is good.

Heavy games can also be played smoothly on the Epic 1 and multitasking is also done without any problem. 4G worked fine and call quality was good too. Apart from this, the audio from the stereo speakers is also excellent. During our review, we didn’t notice any overheating when gaming and recording videos at 1080p resolution.

When it comes to benchmarks, the InFocus Epic 1 easily outperforms its rivals. We got great numbers from the phone in the benchmark test.

Talking about the fingerprint sensor, the Epic 1 is slightly inferior to other smartphones in this price range. And in at least two tries, it recognizes the fingerprint and sometimes it looks weird.

The Epic 1’s 16-megapixel rear camera works fast. And the camera app also launches without any delay. The camera interface is easy to use and cleaner than most other smartphones in this price range. InFocus has implemented PIP mode in the Epic One, which allows you to shoot simultaneously with the front and rear cameras.

The rear camera locks focus fairly quickly, even when the frame isn’t stable, and we liked that. There is no need to touch the screen for this. However, we did encounter occasional shutter issues when clicking through images. Some photos also turn out ugly, but this is not always the case.

In some photos taken with the camera, we saw more reflections, which is disappointing. This problem is not often seen in smartphones of this price. There was a bit of object noise in daylight landscape shots, though colors were mostly accurate. Photos taken in artificial light or in low light are also not very good. A lot of noise was seen in most of these shots. Great selfies come from the phone’s front-facing camera.

The 3000 mAh non-removable battery lasted 10 hours and 40 minutes in our video loop test. Which isn’t bad, but phones in the same segment and battery capacity fared much better in our review. With normal or heavy use, the Epic 1 lasts a day on a single full charge. Fast charging support is a nice feature. The phone takes 30 minutes to charge from 0 to 50 percent and fully charges in 2 hours.

our verdict
The InFocus Epic 1 definitely wowed us with its performance. And credit goes to the deca-core Helio X20 processor. This smartphone can easily carry out daily work and is more powerful than all existing smartphones in the same price range. But, the Epic 1 is not a complete package due to average battery life and camera performance and interface.

If you are thinking of buying a powerful smartphone, the InFocus Epic 1 is the right choice. Apart from this, you can also buy Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 (Review) and Moto G4 Plus (Review). Recently, in our review, these smartphones received excellent marks.
