KIYG 2022: Host Madhya Pradesh wins hockey gold, breaks weightlifting record

Host Madhya Pradesh secured the third position at the Khelo India Youth Games with a very strong performance. The Madhya Pradesh team has a chance to win a total of 36 Gold medals at the 2022 Khelo India Youth Games. Maharashtra continues to top the medal list with 53 gold medals.

Host Madhya Pradesh won the gold medal in the men’s hockey competition on the last day of the Khelo India 2022 Madhya Pradesh Youth Games on Friday, i.e., on the 12th day of the event. The team defeated Odisha 3-2 in the competition held at MP Mahila Academy Turf, Gwalior. While Manipur weightlifter M. Martina Devi won the gold medal in the girls over 81kg category. With this gold medal, she also broke three junior national records.

Maharashtra topped

Maharashtra won a total of 53 gold, 53 silver and 47 bronze medals at the 2022 Khelo India Youth Games. With these medals, Maharashtra topped the medal count. Haryana and Madhya Pradesh came second and third with 40 and 36 gold respectively. At the same time, after the men’s hockey competition, the Madhya Pradesh team failed to win the gold medal in the women’s hockey competition. The Jharkhand team won 4-3.

Kerala and Manipur won gold medals in men’s and women’s football respectively, while top seed Aryan Shah of Gujarat and second seed Suhita Maruri of Karnataka won gold medals in men’s and women’s singles tennis.

An individual re-created three more youth national records at the Indore basketball complex, home of the weightlifting competition. M. Martina Devi from Manipur won gold in the women’s 81kg+ category with a total lift of 199kg. It was not only a junior national record, but also the snatch (88 kg) and clean and jerk (111 kg). In the women’s 81kg category, Chowdhary Sree Lakshmi from Andhra won the gold medal with a total lift of 191kg. In the men’s 102kg category, Delhi’s Akshat Sharma won gold by lifting 274kg. Paramveer Singh from Chandigarh, out of boys 102kg and over, won gold with a total lift of 311kg.

Earlier in the day, Haryana beat Odisha 1-0 in the women’s hockey bronze, while Punjab beat Jharkhand 2-0 in the men’s bronze. Kerala won the men’s football competition when they defeated Karnataka 2-0 at the Emerald Heights Football Ground in Indore. In the first half of the match, Shriraj CP (31st minute) and Kiran K (43rd minute) scored for the winning team. In the women’s football final, Manipur beat West Bengal 1-0 with Babita Oinam Devi scoring a goal in the 74th minute of the match.
