We Tried It: Blue Chamomile For Stress-Relief, Better Sleep

Many people are aware of the calming effects of Chamomile, which is often brewed as a tea to relieve everything from bodily stress to chronic anxiety. But what about blue chamomile?

Matricaria chamomilla, a german chamomile that has a higher azulene ratio than common chamomile (this its rich blue color) shares similar therapeitic properties that make it an excellent oil to dilute for various healing applications.

According to Floracopeia:

“Blue chamomile was highly regarded by ancient Egyptians for its healing properties, was and is widely employed in Latin American folk medicine, and is today one of the most commonly used healing herbs, particularly in the form of teas and tinctures, in the West.

Calming and cooling, organic blue chamomile oil is among the most supportive for a healthy inflammatory response to be found in nature’s pharmacopeia.” (The azulene is not present in the fresh flower itself, but is produced during the process of distillation.)

Blue chamomile essential oil can be diluted in a carrier oil (such as coconut, sesame, or avocado) at a ratio of about 12 drops of essential oil to each fluid ounce of carrier oil or other natural lipid/moisturizer (you can mix the oil into body lotion for a gentle, effective treatment– the goal is 2% dilution, so a little essential oil goes a long way).

Then, the diluted salve can be dabbed on joints to promote healthy joint function, or on the wrists, feet, or temples to promote relaxation and encourage healthy sleep patterns (the essential oil can also be used in a diffuser or bath– just add a few drops directly to the water– or by direct inhalation to promote healthy sleep and a deep sense of wellbeing). Blue chamomile has the ability to sedate without depressive effects, and is gentle enough to use on children, the elderly, or those with sensitive skin. For those in stressful situations, apply a few drops to the soles of the feet to support calm and relaxation. It’s a gentle, non-invasive way to pick yourself up in those moments when you need it most. (Just be sure to wear socks afterwards, as the blue color can stain!)
