With his epic scale, unconventional materials, and original approach to glass, Dale Chihuly’s art is a favorite for gardens around the world– but it’s been almost ten years since Chihuly has had a major Garden exhibition.

Fortunately, the wait is over. Opening on April 22nd, 2017 and running through October 29th, 2017 at the New York Botanical Garden is a new display of Dale Chihuly’s work called simply CHIHULY. The exhibit comprises 20 outdoor installations created specially to complement and engage the NYBG’s landscape, as well as Chihuly’s sketches and early work, which offer insight into his artistic development.

“The New York Botanical Garden is the perfect setting for Dale Chihuly’s art,” Gregory Long, Chief Executive Officer and The William C. Steere Sr. President of NYBG remarked when the collaboration was first announced. “Our historic landscape is an open-air museum, providing a thrilling opportunity for our visitors to see the spectacular glass sculptures, especially when they will be lit at night. The exhibition will be a more holistic look at the legacy of Chihuly the artist.”

Chihuly, born in 1941 in Tacoma, Washington, is recognized internationally for his contributions to outdoor glass art, and among his many accomplishments to field is setting up the Rhode Island School of Design’s glass department. His work has been shown in places as far reaching and varied as Venice and Jerusalem, and in 2006, his work was installed at the NYBG.

In addition to the exhibit itself, special CHIHULY Nights will open up the garden to after-dark viewing during the summer, when the sculptures are illuminated with dazzling lights, for an entirely new experience.
