Love The Great British Bakeoff? Grow up reading The Secret Garden? Wish you could escape to some charmingly remote English country estate, with fields of green and patches of wildflowers?
Enter our latest giveaway: The Great Dixter Cookbook, a book that’s part recipes, part planting guide, and completely infused with a pastoral British grace. All of the recipes are seasonal, and are drawn from the kitchen garden at The Great Dixter, the historic family home of legendary gardener and garden writer Christopher Lloyd. Located in East Sussex, The Great Dixter is open to the public, who are welcome to explore the three houses and the surrounding scenic gardens that makes up the estate. (A few of the recipes are Christopher Lloyd’s own, taken from his notebooks.)
“I hope that what we’ve achieved is something that respects and acknowledges the history of this place, but is firmly rooted in the present,” author Aaron Bertelsen told GC. “Great Dixter is a living house and garden, not a historical monument, and the food we eat is an important part of that.”
Like all of Phaidon’s books, The Great Dixter Cookbook is as much a visual masterpiece as it is a source of information. Recipes are paired with simple photos of dishes, framed by well-worn wood surfaces. The dishes presented range from traditional English recipes (beetroot chutney) to the modern (crispy kale with sea salt and shakshuka). But as Bertelsen clarifies: “The point is that the principles have remained the same: to take what is in season, when it’s at its best, and do as little as possible to it. The food that is cooked here can’t go out of fashion, because it was never in fashion in the first place.”
