Best Minthara Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 features numerous companions that bounce off the player’s actions and dialogue choices. Some companions prefer the kind route, where you help save the Tieflings, for example. Others prefer a dark pathway, leading to devastating results like murder and mayhem. Minthara is the latter. She’s an all-around villain, siding with the goblins to eradicate Druid Grove, and she’s a romanceable companion to boot. But to make the most of this companion, you’ll want to focus on creating the best Minthara build!

So, if players want a little domination in their romance and a helping of evil, then Mithara should be choice number one. But even after the romance ends, she’ll remain a viable fighting companion with the party. Here’s how to flesh out the best Minthara build in Baldur’s Gate 3!

The Ultimate Minthara Build

While many will argue that Minthara is one of the weakest companions in Baldur’s Gate 3, especially when placed side-by-side with Shadowheart or Karlach, with the right Minthara build setup, she can hold her own. Here are some basics to get you started:

  • Class: Paladin
  • Race: Drow
  • Subclass: Roll to Oath of Vengeance
  • Base Proficiencies: Athletics, Insight, Intimidation, Medicine, Persuasion, Religion
  • Gear: Two-Handed Greatsword and Full-Plate Armor
  • Romanceable: Yes
  • Weapon Proficiencies: Martial and Simple
  • Armor Proficiency: Heavy Armor
  • Primary Ability: Charisma

These are very basic stats to help you better understand Minthara as a whole. You’ll know that, for her subclass, we recommend rerolling to Oath of Vengeance. It’s possible to respect or reroll a companion early in the game, allowing you to change their skills and spell selections. With Oath of Vengeance, Minthara will gain Channel Oath Charges, Lay On Hands, and Divine Sense. Channel Oath Charges prove exceptionally useful as they allow the character to fuel additional actions immediately. For example, Minthara can follow up an attack with a second strike.

Why Oath of Vengeance for your Minthara build? Aside from the numerous spells and cantrips offered in the subclass, Vengeance is one of the most powerful Paladin subclasses, thanks to its high damage output, debuffs, and survivability. With its strong focus on damage, you will want a healer in your party. Normally, a Paladin could heal party members as a secondary medic, but Oath of Vengeance does not focus on healing buffs. This setup works well for Minthara.

Furthermore, when it comes to her ability score, you should aim for the following to capitalize on her Paladin abilities, which further focus on melee abilities and survivability:

  • Strength – 16
  • Dexterity – 10
  • Constitution – 14
  • Intelligence – 8
  • Wisdom – 10
  • Charisma – 16

A high Strength and Charisma will lead to stronger attacks and spells for an Oath of Vengeance Paladin Build. You can alter her ability score by visiting the campsite by talking with Withers. It will cost 100 gold, however.

Recommended Skills and Spells for Minthara Build

At level 1, Minthara is already quite formidable. She’s a tough Paladin capable of taking down most of the Druids in Emerald Grove solo. But to make the most of her build, you should focus on the following at each level:

  • Level 1 – There’s nothing to select at level 1 for Minthara.
  • Level 2 – Searing Smite, Thunderous Smite, Shield of Faith, Divine Favor, or Cure Wounds prove most effective for her fighting style and role as a Paladin.
  • Level 3 – Command, which allows Minthara to command a creature to flee from a fight, move closer, freeze, or drop. It’s a useful crowd-control ability when facing monstrous enemies.
  • Level 4 – Protection from Evil and Good is an excellent spell designed to protect allies from all manner of enemies. While not useful in every fight, it does have uses later in the game.
  • Level 5 – Branding Smite will deal 2d6 radiant damage and potentially prevent an enemy from turning invisible.
  • Level 6 – Magic Weapon will infuse a weapon using arcane energy, receiving a +1 bonus to Attack and Damage rolls.
  • Level 7 – Lesser Restoration will cure a creature of disease, poison, paralysis, or blindness.
  • Level 8 – There’s no spell to select at level 8, but you can choose an Ability Improvement. We recommend taking Great Weapon Master, a feat that, when a melee weapon lands a crit or kills an enemy, you can strike once more as a bonus action.

After level 8, up until level 12, you’ll want to focus on whatever works best for your party. If you’ve specced Minthara into a purely damage-dealing Paladin build, as is common with Oath of Vengeance, then focus on spells that buff damage, provide additional actions, or spells that strike hard for AEO damage to help clear the field faster.
