The Joys of June

With the joyous Jubilee still keeping our hearts lifted, this month’s blog doffs its hat at royalty. Read on to find out why queens and commoners alike still love to be beside the seaside…

All Cassino’s venues are located by the Seaside, and it was while Queen Victoria was on the throne that the coastal towns of the UK became popular holiday destinations. This was in part due to the 1871 Bank Holidays Act, which stated that particular days each year were to be official public holidays.

The second major factor was that railway travel had, by this time, become a speedy way to enjoy a paddle and a lung-full of ozone.

Thirdly, salt water was believed to be beneficial to health, so a trip to the seaside was also considered to be restorative. To be ‘taking the waters’ was deemed to be a great way to recuperate or to recharge your batteries.

Coastal towns were soon popular hot spots for visitors. The working class came for day trips, or stayed in cheap lodgings, while posher folk lashed out on hotels.

And members of the royal family royalty have been no strangers to local seaside towns. Many of them have enjoyed the South Coastal towns of Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Worthing down the years, including Queen Victoria, our own dear Queen and Princess Diana (who brought her boys to stay in a Bognor Regis property that belonged to her father, Earl Spencer).

And of course there was King George V, to whom the famous quote “Bugger Bognor!” is attributed (it is alleged that the poorly King spoke these words on his death bed in response to the suggestion that he should keep his spirits up in anticipation of visiting his favourite seaside town).

In the 1950s, with the advent of holiday camps, seaside towns enjoyed a second renaissance.  Families flocked to towns like Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, all keen to have fun in the sun, a dip in the sea and a the chance to don a Kiss-Me-Quick hat.

Fast-forward to today, and still the good old British seaside remains a popular choice, with many families returning year after year (we often welcome returning visitors to our venues). And the entertainment that our ancestors loved continues to thrive – Punch & Judy, making sandcastles, eating fish & chips and strolling on the prom.

There is a rich history just waiting to be delved into for all our locations, so head over to the town’s museum websites to discover more.*

In the meantime, while you might be coming to Bognor Regis, Worthing or Littlehampton primarily to enjoy the sand, sea and sticks of rock, be sure to pay our friendly and welcoming venues a visit too; come and have some holiday fun by playing our games and machines. Because, just like the traditional postcard sign-off, we wish you were here!
