SHUT IN THEATER: Weekend Reading 161

Tags: weekend

Saturday’s here, and that means Weekend Reading 161 is here, too! As you might expect, the Beat Elite are holing up in Stately Beat Manor and getting lost in a good book.

What will you be paging through this weekend? The Beat is waiting to hear from you! Give us a shout-out, here in the comment section or over on social media @comicsbeat, and let us know!

Weekend Reading 161: The Complete Omni.

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’ll be checking out The Complete Omni by Melody Cooper, Devin Grayson, Alitha E. Martinez, Giovanni Valletta, Cris Bolson and Enid Balám. I’m calling it the “Omni omnibus.” I’ll also be re-reading The Beat Original comic posted on the site yesterday, Pure Indulgence by Hayley Gold.

Weekend Reading 161: Superman: Space Age.

RICARDO SERRANO: I got my hands this week on Mark Russell and Michael Allred’s Superman: Space Age. I’m a sucker for Cold War stories, so seeing Supes try to grapple with the Kennedy Assassination and the Cuban Missile Crisis is exactly what I need. I’m also a sucker for Rusell’s brand of writing, which never fails to be funny, poignant, and thought-provoking. Allred on art is just the cherry on top. The book was nominated for an Eisner award too, so it’ll be interesting to see what makes it so special.

Weekend Reading 161: The Shining and Wasp.

CY BELTRAN: I’m trying to catch up on all of my reading this week, and that starts with more of Stephen King’s The Shining, but I also plan on jumping into Wasp, from Al Ewing, Kasia Nie, KJ Díaz, and Cory Petit. I’ve been saving the whole series to read all the way through at once and now’s the time to do it. I also think I’ll start the Guardians of the Galaxy game for the PS4. I don’t play a lot of video games, but I snagged a copy of this after seeing such rave reviews online (even if I am behind the curve by a while). Maybe I’ll even get to see Vol. 3 this weekend, who knows!

Weekend Reading 161: November Book One.

TAIMUR DAR: My first introduction to comic creator Matt Fraction was through his Marvel work back when I was getting back into comics. It occurred to me that I have yet to check out his November graphic novel series with artist Elsa Charretier along with colorist: Matt Hollingsworth and letterer Kurt Ankeny. I aim to rectify that by reading November Vol. 1: The Girl on the Roof over the weekend.

Weekend Reading 161: The Yellow “M” & One Piece Vol 68.

DEAN SIMONS: Looking like another heavy work weekend but I will unwind with some more slow reading: Blake & Mortimer: The Yellow ‘M’ – I have reached the final act of Edgar P. Jacobs classic story (published by Cinebook and translated by Clarence E Holland); meanwhile I continue Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece (published by Viz, translated by Stephen Paul) as I begin vol 68 of the epic series.
