Bloodied and Bruised – Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica

Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

New Combat Actions for the Creatures in Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica

The bugbear chief nurses a gushing wound in her side before issuing an order of retreat to her allies. A bright light forms around the angel’s dying body, blinding everyone near it as it passes on from the world of the living. With blood streaming down its torso, an enraged hill giant slams its fists into the ground and causes the earth around it to quake.

Bloodied and amp; Bruised is a series providing new combat actions for the creatures in the 5e roster. When pushed to their limits in combat, these monsters, critters, fiends, and foes gain new abilities that aid them in battle, or perhaps spell their doom depending on the circumstances. Bloodied and amp; Bruised takes inspiration from the "bloodied" condition from 4e, making entirely new combat actions that can completely change the nature of a fight.

In addition, Bloodied and amp; Bruised also introduces several "death throes" to the game, marking the demise of certain creatures with a grand explosion, heavy fall, or other unique effect to make the slaying of a great monster a truly unique experience.

Examples of Bloodied Actions

Archon of the Triumvirate
When bloodied at 72 HP, the archon of the triumvirate has the following features.

  • Ability Recharge: Legendary Actions. When first bloodied, the archon regains all expended uses of its legendary actions.
  • Strength: In Love and War. While bloodied, the archon has advantage on attack rolls against creatures it has charmed.
  • Strength: Mounted Superiority. While bloodied and mounted, the archon has advantage on all saving throws. It also has advantage on checks made to stay mounted.
  • Trigger Ability: Pacifying Presence. When first bloodied, the archon uses its Pacifying Presence action as a reaction.
  • Death Throes: Sorrow of the Mount. When the archon dies, its mount is distraught at the loss of its rider. If the mount is still alive, it can immediately move up to twice its speed and make a melee attack against the creature that killed the archon. Any attack rolls the mount makes against the creature that killed the archon have advantage, and it continues to target the creature until the mount or the creature is dead.

Warleader Aurelia
When bloodied at 143 HP, Aurelia has the following features.

  • Ability Recharge: Legendary Actions. When first bloodied, Aurelia regains all expended uses of her legendary actions.
  • Ability Recharge: Warleader’s Helix. When first bloodied, Aurelia’s Warleader’s Helix ability is recharged.
  • New Ability: Battle Presence. While bloodied, Aurelia has two reactions per round.
  • New Ability: Repositioning. As a bonus action while bloodied, Aurelia can command one of her allies to reposition. The creature can use its reaction to move up to its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Trigger Ability: Cornered. When first bloodied, Aurelia can make a melee attack against a creature within range as a reaction.
  • Death Throes: Angelic Fury. When Aurelia dies, she burns with divine fury, clinging on to life for just long enough to enact vengeance on the creature that doomed her. She moves up to her speed towards the creature that dealt the killing blow against her, attacking the creature three times with her longsword if she can reach it. Then, bright light burns in a silhouette of the slain angel. Each creature within 30 feet of Aurelia that can see her must succeed on a DC 23 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the beginning of its next turn.
