Playstation Plus ‘propelled Deep Rock Galactic even further into closing into mainstream,’ Ghost Ship Games CEO says

Deep Rock Galactic, an indie co-op shooter which features bad-ass space dwarves shooting up hordes of enormous insects in procedurally generated caves might have flown under the radar if it weren’t for Playstation Plus, said Soren Lundgaard, CEO of Ghost Ship Games during the latest earnings call for its parent company, Embracer Group.

“We broke all our records on player numbers and revenue”, Lundgaard said, regarding Deep Rock Galactic’s Season 1 release. “It surpassed our 1.0 release and paved the way for where we are today with Deep Rock.”

Deep Rock Galactic first appeared on Playstation Plus, Sony’s video game subscription service last year and according to Lundgaard, quickly drew the interest of players in the multiple millions, who not only showed player engagement but purchased the cosmetic DLCs as well.

“Already, two months later, we took advantage of this, on PlayStation Plus deal. We entered into PlayStation Plus and very, very fast, 10 million players claimed the game, started playing, enjoying the new season content, buying the cosmetic DLCs and just had a really good time together. And this propelled the Deep Rock Galactic IP even further into closing into mainstream.”

In Deep Rock Galactic‘s 2022 year in review, Ghost Ship Games revealed that the game’s average number of players for 2022 was 113,700, which was up from around 75,000 in 2021. The average number of players per month was 827,890. Deep Rock Galactic is also available on Xbox’s Game Pass subscription service, so when the information becomes available pertaining to how Game Pass affected the number of players for the game in addition to Playstation, we’ll update accordingly.
