The Football Career of Monterrey’s Star Miguel Layún

Miguel Arturo Layún Prado is a Mexican football player who was born in Córdoba, Veracruz, Mexico, on June 25, 1988. He is 32 years old and currently plays as a right-back for Club de Futbol Monterrey, a team that belongs to the first division of the Mexican Soccer League.

Miguel Layún’s Professional Career

Miguel Layún began his professional soccer career with his local team Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz. During his time with Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz he played a total of 31 games without scoring a single goal for 2 years. His debut in professional soccer occurred on March 28, 2007, entering the second half of his team’s match against Necaxa.

Layún made history on September 27, 2009 when he made his debut with Atalanta, a team belonging to the Italian Serie A. In this match, Miguel entered in the 82nd minute and became the first Mexican to play for a Serie A club. The match resulted in a 1-1 draw against Chievo Verona.

After a year in Italy, Layún made a surprise return to Mexican soccer to play the 2010 Bicentennial tournament with Águilas del América. He played for América for 4 years, and his most important achievement during this time was the poker scored against Santos Laguna in the 2014 opening tournament, as well as being team captain which allowed him to lift the 2014 Apertura Tournament Champion trophy.

On January 9, 2015, his 4-and-a-half-year contract signing was announced for Watford Football Club, a team that belongs to the Premier League. During his first year, Layún was a fundamental pillar in the rise of Watford to the first division of English football. On August 8, 2015, he made his Premier League debut scoring a goal for Everton in Liverpool on the road. The match ended 1-1.

When everything seemed on track for Layún in the Premier League, he was loaned to FC Porto on August 31, 2015, with an option to buy. Layún played a total of 2 years with the Portuguese team, and on January 29, 2018, his session at Sevilla FC of the Spanish soccer league became official. In Sevilla, Layún played a total of 18 games and scored 2 goals.

On July 11, 2018, he announced his signing for Villareal, a team where he had almost no opportunities. After 6 months of almost inactivity, Layún decided to return to Mexican soccer. On January 30, 2019, he transferred to his current team Monterrey. Layún became one of the best players within the team for the closing of 2019.

Mexico National Team

In 2013, Miguel Layún was called up by Jose Manuel de la Torre for the first time to play on Mexico’s senior team. From then on, he has participated in each of the tournaments played by the Mexican soccer team, which include the Gold Cup and the Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018 FIFA World Cups.
