Level 5 | Deal ten damage to an enemy and give it –eight Attack this turn. | Restore 15 Health. |
Xyrella has the ability to cast spells. What distinguishes Xyrella is her ability Blinding Luminus which lets her target an Enemy and give them minus attack, thereby lowering their attack to zero.
It’s also a fairly quick ability, so it’ll most likely happen before the majority of the other characters can use theirs.
So, when you see a fighter or defense preparing to attack, you zap them and give them a forming sword instead of a huge gigantic ax. That’s rather powerful. There is also no cooldown.
As a result, equipping Radiant Wand nearly always renders an opponent’s mercenary useless while simultaneously doing Damage to it.
Sylvannas
Skills & Abilities
Banshee Bolt | Reclaimed Souls | For the Queen
Level 1 | Deal damage equal to this Merc’s Attack. | Gain 1 Attack for each friendly character that died this game. | Choose an enemy. An adjacent enemy Attacks it. |

Level 5 | Deal damage equal to this Merc’s Attack. | Gain 5 Attack for each friendly character that died this game. | Choose an enemy. An adjacent enemy Attacks it. |
Sylvanas, for example, is an interesting example of a character who isn’t particularly remarkable outside of a group built to use her, but when properly fueled, she can transform into a gigantic wrecking ball.
Slyvanas may tap into the souls of the dead to significantly boost her own attack value, and if used creatively with, say, a ton of fodder like summoned characters meant to die, you can end up with an absolute banshee queen on the field.
Sylvanas’ ability, Reclaimed Souls, grants +1 attack for each allied player that died during the game. If you think about it, if you put Sylvanas in, she can get a lot of attacks after a couple of mercenaries die. And because she doesn’t have to strike at her opponents to deliver this damage, she may do .
Cairne Bloodhoof
Skills & Abilities
Ancestral Uppercut | Endurance Aura | Earth Stomp
Level 1 | Attack an enemy. Restore 2 Health for each enemy that hasn’t acted yet | Gain Taunt for one turn. Your characters are 1 Speed faster this turn. | Deal 2 damage to all enemies. They are one Speed slower next turn. |
Level 2 | Attack an enemy. Restore 4 Health for each enemy that hasn’t acted yet | Gain Taunt for one turn. Your characters are 2 Speeds faster this turn. | Deal 5 damage to all enemies. They are one Speed slower next turn. |
Level 3 | Attack an enemy. Restore 6 Health for each enemy that hasn’t acted yet | Gain Taunt for two turns. Your characters are 2 Speeds faster this turn. | Deal 8 damage to all enemies. They are one Speed slower next turn. |
Level 4 | Attack an enemy. Restore 7 Health for each enemy that hasn’t acted yet | Gain Taunt for two turns. Your characters are 3 Speed faster this turn. | Deal 9 damage to all enemies. They are one Speed slower next turn. |
Level 5 | Attack an enemy. Restore 8 Health for each enemy that hasn’t acted yet | Gain Taunt for two turns. Your characters are 4 Speed faster this turn. | Deal 10 damage to all enemies. They are one Speed slower next turn. |
Cairne is a great initiator and whoever takes the initiative gets to accomplish things first. When Cairne does damage to all enemies it slows them down, your characters will almost certainly attack first in the following encounter.
And it still delivers some damage, like 10 to each which means 30 damage in a single strike, and a one-turn cooldown, which isn’t awful.
Let’s say all of the mercs have 100 health and 10 attacks, and they’re simply going back and forth. In the final fight, when everyone has 10 health remaining, whoever attacks first would most likely win, theoretically.
On top of that, Cairne has some great stats, and if you mix in reincarnation and some really strong equipment, you’ve got a pretty tanky unit that’s hanging around for a while with some AOE slow, some sustain, and some speed buff for your own mercs.
Thrall
Skills & Abilities
For the Horde | Lightning Storm | Warchief’s Command
Level 1 | Give your Orcs +1 attack an enemy | Deal 2 damage to all enemies | Deal 4 damage to an enemy. Your left-most character Attacks it. |
Level 2 | Give your Orcs +2 attack an enemy | Deal 5 damage to all enemies | Deal 7 damage to an enemy. Your left-most character Attacks it. |
Level 3 | Give your Orcs +3 attack an enemy | Deal 8 damage to all enemies | Deal 10 damage to an enemy. Your left-most character Attacks it. |
Level 4 | Give your Orcs +4 attack an enemy | Deal 9 damage to all enemies | Deal 11 damage to an enemy. Your left-most character Attacks it. |
Level 5 | Give your Orcs +5 attack an enemy | Deal 10 damage to all enemies | Deal 12 damage to an enemy. Your left-most character Attacks it. |
Thrall’s ability For The Horde is particularly effective in the Orc lineup, boosting all troops on your board by + 5 attacks and then assaulting the enemy.
So you’re doing damage ramping for the entirety of the battle, it’s a permanent damage ramp for the fight, and you’re also attacking an enemy with it, and it has no cooldown, so you can do it every round.
Thrall is going to be smoking pretty hard if you’re ramping up every round and have additional attacking Winfrey.
So, while Thrall may become incredibly strong if he can fit into an Orc lineup, but he becomes much less effective outside of an Orc lineup.
Malfurion
Skill & Abilities
Cenarion Surge | Entangling Roots | Archdruid’s Call
Level 1 | Deal 4 damage. Your character’s Nature abilities are 1 Speed faster next turn. | Deal 6 damage to an enemy and Root it. | Choose One – Deal 4 damage to all enemies; or Restore 8 Health to your characters. |

It’s no surprise that Malfurion is regarded as one of the meta’s most powerful supports right now.
Although he’s a simple hero to play with a simple kit, don’t let that deceive you; he’s a monster when it comes to sheer healing. His scaling is massive, especially late in the game.
Overall, he lacks great playmaking ability. If we exclude his Ultimate, the only thing he’ll give his teammates with is a heal over time, and they’ll have to manage it properly during the battles, so it’s safe to say it doesn’t come with a lot of responsibility.
Aside from that, you’ll want to add to the poking and keep in mind that his roots may not be powerful enough on their own, but should be followed up with any CC chain to finish with a kill.
