How to get more rocks in Animal Crossing

Tags: rock

Rocks occur naturally in all Animal Crossing games. It is only in New Horizons whereby rocks are destructible.

The maximum amount of rocks in the game are usually 6.

Types of rocks

Even though the rocks are 6, they can be classified into two groups: bell rocks and ore rocks. 5 of the rocks fall under ore rocks while the last one falls under bell rocks.

1. Bell rocks

A bell rock occurs once a day, either in the player’s town or island. This type of rock is similar to the normal rock; from shape to size. The only difference is that when bell rocks are struck, they produce Bells.

The Bells can be seen lying in adjacent spaces. From the moment you strike a rock and find out that it is a bell rock, there is a 10-second limit to knock out as many Bells as possible.

After that, the bell rocks will stop dispensing Bells for the day. The amount of Bells dispensed vary every time the rocks are struck. You can do every day to earn quick money.

PS: There is a slight chance that you get an island filled with bell rocks after you upgrade the Resident Services building upgrade.

2. Ore rocks

This type of rock is usually found in the Deserted Island. But they still can be found in a player’s town or island. When they are struck, they produce any of the following materials: clay, stone, iron nuggets and golden nuggets which are very rare.

PS: Using a Silver Shovel on the bell rock will sometimes produce ores instead of Bells.

How to break a rock

You will notice that the entire island has a grid system layout and each rock is surrounded by 8 squares. These squares must be empty so that the materials coming out of the rock have a place to land. You will need a stone axe or shovel to strike the rocks. Any rock can be struck for a maximum of 8 times.

There is no sure way to know which material will be produced when you strike a rock. It all depends on luck. To make sure you get the most out of each rock, you will need to first ensure the area immediately around the rock is clear of flowers, weeds, sticks, or anything else that may be in the way.

Rocks will only dispense materials when there is space immediately around the rock. Even a simple item such as a flower can get a rock to stop dispensing materials. Once the space around the rock is clear, you should approach the rock at an angle then dig two holes behind you. Every time you strike the rock, you will be moved further from the rock a little bit.

What you should know

This means that without support behind you, after two strikes, you will be out of reach of the rock. The quick walk back to the rock will take away time and leave you with less material.

You should position yourself between the rock and the two holes, then press ‘A’ repeatedly. With the two holes behind you for support, you will be able to harvest all the materials the rock has to offer.

To be able to get more materials, eat any fruit adjacent the rock. This will make you stronger thus being able to smash the rock completely and getting more materials. Press ‘Y’ to collect all the materials produced by the rock.

All of the rocks you break will respawn in a random spot on your island, but note that only one rock will respawn each day. In other words, if you break six rocks today, you’ll only have one rock tomorrow and it will take nearly a week for them all to come back.

However, rocks can only respawn in locations that meet certain requirements. For example, picture a 3×3 grid. In the center square of that grid is your potential rock spawn location. If any of the eight surrounding squares are blocked by something, the rock will not spawn.

PS: Anything that you can’t walk through will prevent a rock from respawning.

How to make a rock garden

Because rocks respawn one at a time each day in different locations, you can choose to make your rock garden so that you can get more rocks quickly. For you to make one, you will need the following items:

  • A grid area of 7×5 or 7×9
  • 6 fruits
  • Shovel or stone axe
  • Custom Designs app

First of all, you will need to set up a grid for your rock garden. So, you can either use a 7×5 grid area, or a 7×9 grid area. When you open up your map, you’ll see that the regions will become grids inside the map. You can only have a total of 4 rocks in any one region of the map. So, you’ll need to set your grid on the line which divides two regions. This will allow you to have 6 rocks instead.

Your space should be void of any hard paths. The following places or items are considered as hard paths: the edges of cliffs, rivers or ponds, pieces of wood, and any space beside trees, buildings or on the beach. This is because they prevent rocks from spawning.

When you have found a suitable spot, use the Custom Designer app to place a path tile where you want each rock. Eat the 6 fruits when you have completed the step above. After you have replenished your energy, go ahead and break all the 6 rocks on your island.

Collect all the materials produced and block all the empty squares using mannequins. They are available in the Custom Design app. This prevents the rocks from respawning in the empty squares. This will force the rocks to respawn in your garden. After a few days, you will find all 6 rocks in your garden.

PS: Having a rock garden saves you the time you would have spent looking for where a rock has respawned.

Conclusion

While you’ll earn more if you get more rocks in Animal Crossing, to maximize your resources, limit yourself to breaking one rock per day. If you have any questions surrounding this topic, let us know in the comments below.
