GTA 5 crashes on startup- how to fix

It can be frustrating when Grand Theft Auto Five (GTA 5) crashes. It can crash on startup, in the middle of the game or when launching the game.

This usually happens due to a Graphics card issue. With a corrupted or unstable graphics card, the game is most likely to crash. The second possible reason for crashing is when your GTA 5 is of an outdated version. Furthermore, any other technical problem with your game or computer or PS4 can lead to crashing.

Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to stop your GTA 5 from crashing.

How to stop GTA 5 from crashing

The following are some of the ways that have helped users fix their GTA 5 crashing issue. You don’t have to try all of them at a go. Just try one after the other until you fix the problem.

  1. Restart your game or computer

This is the easiest way. Many technical issues can be fixed by restarting. Thus, restarting your game or computer can help. Try running the game again to see if the problem is gone.

  1. Install the latest GTA 5 version

Game developers do release new versions to improve their games and fix any errors. You should, therefore, check for any GTA 5 updates from the developer’s official website. Update your game then try again.

  1. Update graphics card drivers

If the graphics card Driver is missing or outdated, Grand Theft Auto 5 can crash in your windows. To fix this, you need to update your graphics card driver. You can update it either manually or automatically.

To manually update your graphics card drive;

  • Go to your graphics driver’s manufacturer website
  • Find the correct graphics card driver
  • Install it on your computer

To automatically do the same, you need a software capable of detecting the condition of your computer drivers. The software helps you install the correct drivers. Driver Easy, Driver Booster, Driver Talent, among others are examples of such software.

  1. Change graphics settings to normal

The performance of GTA 5 can be optimized by setting the graphics properly. Try to lower the graphics settings of your game down.

This is what you should do;

  • Open GTA 5 settings
  • Click on Graphics then scroll down
  • Change the following settings to normal:
    1. Texture Quality
    2. Shader Quality
    3. Shadow Quality
    4. Reflector Quality
    5. Grass Quality
    6. save your settings

Try running GTA again.

  1. Turn Vsync on

Vertical sync (Vsync) is a display feature in 3D games. It enables the user to synchronize the frame rate to match the monitor refresh rate to enhance stability. The Vsync being off can also cause the crashing. Turning it on can fix the issue.

To do this:

  • Open GTA 5 settings
  • Click Graphics then scroll down
  • Find Vsync
  • Turn it on
  • When the Vsync is on already;
  • Turn it off
  • Restart your GTA 5
  • Turn it on again

Try running it again after doing this.

Now you’ve got it. I hope this article will help improve your experience with GTA 5. Feel free to share your experience with the issue in the comments section below.
