CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY: WHICH KNITTED NUMBER IS YOUR FAVOURITE?

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmaaaaas! We hope you’re wearing your nattiest knitwear because it’s Christmas Jumper Day. If you’ve forgotten to put yours on, don’t worry! You’ve still got time to grab it from the loft and join in the festive fun.

Nothing says it’s Chrimbo season quite like wearing the ugliest jumper you’ve ever seen in your life. And while they used to be an embarrassing present given as a joke, these days they’re a fashion statement and every man and his reindeer owns one.

In fact, around 12 million Christmas jumpers are sold every year in the UK. But why are they so popular? And where did they come from? Let’s find out!

What’s the deal with Christmas jumpers?

While they feel like a fairly modern tradition, Christmas Jumpers date all the way back to 1890s Scandinavia. They were all hand-knitted back then, obviously, in order to keep people warm during the winter months.

Sadly, they were invented before cameras. But we reckon these original jumpers weren’t quite as snazzy as the ones we see today.

Fast forward to the 1960s and knitted jumpers started to become associated with Christmas, before adopting the bright, vibrant colours we’ve grown to love.

The ‘80s saw them become a hit across the pond. But ask anyone in the UK their first Christmas jumper memory and there’s a good chance it’ll be Colin Firth’s reindeer number from Bridget Jones’s Diary.

Since then, they’ve soared in popularity to the point where you stand out from the crowd if you don’t own one!

What is Christmas Jumper Day?

So, why is there a day dedicated to Christmas jumpers? Well, there’s a day to celebrate pretty much anything you can think of! But Christmas Jumper Day is different.

It’s an annual event where people are encouraged to wear one to work, school or just out and about. It was started back in 2012 by ‘Save the Children’ and the aim is to raise as much money for charity as possible.
