Amazon Promises To Fix Racially-Biased Same-Day Delivery Service

Amazon has promised that it’s going to fix its racially-biased same-day Delivery Service that operates under the Prime Same Day moniker. It’s going to expand this service to underserved people in 27 cities where the service is currently available. The company has also promised that it’s not going to launch Prime Same Day in any new cities until it’s able to cover every zip code in the cities the service is available in right now.

Bloomberg conducted an investigation last month which revealed that the same-day delivery service was biased in favor of whites. The report mentions that black residents in Dallas, Washington, Chicago and Atlanta were “about half as likely” to be eligible for the same-day delivery service as white residents.

Amazon has made the pledge in a statement obtained by the  Congressional Black Caucus, it has already alerted the company that it’s monitoring the situation and has also supported calls for an investigation into the matter by the Federal Trade Commission.

“Very shortly, we will be expanding Prime Same Day Service to every zip code of the 27 cities where Prime Same Day delivery is currently launched,” Amazon said in the statement, adding that the service will not be launched in any new regions until it’s able to secure a carrier for every zip code.

Amazon said that it’s still figuring out the details and is in the process or acquire last mile delivery for each of these zip codes but promises that “we should have 100 percent coverage shortly.”
