Sharp’s Latest Smartphone Has Two Notches

Many Smartphone users complain when their favorite manufacturers add one notch to a new model so they certainly won’t feel too happy about what Sharp has done. The company has unveiled a new smartphone today that actually has two Notches, one at the top for the front camera and another at the bottom for the fingerprint sensor.

Since the industry shifted to taller displays, the notches have been used for the front camera while the home buttons have been done away with. The fingerprint sensor is either placed at the back or under the display in some cases.

Sharp is going in an entirely different direction with the new Aquos R2 Compact. The device’s 5.2 inch 2280×1080 LCD display wraps around the top notch for the camera and the bottom for the fingerprint sensor.

It’s possible to hide the top notch on some devices using a software trick and it’s as yet unknown if this trick would work on both of this device’s notches. That would leave an already relatively small display with even less screen real estate.

Don’t get fooled by the screen size into thinking this is a mid-range device. It actually has a Snapdragon 845 processor with 4GB of RAM, 64GB storage a 22.6 megapixel rear and 8 megapixel front camera, and a 2,500mAh battery. It will come with Android 9 Pie out of the box.

Sharp will only be offering the Aquos R2 Compact in Japan for now. The price has not yet been revealed.
