The Dell 27 USB-C Ultrathin Monitor is an HDR computer monitor designed to look great and provide the multimedia and color-rendering performance that high-end users and creative semi-professional would want, or need.
Perhaps we can start with its appearance: with the thickest point being 29mm deep and the thinnest point at 5.5mm, it is undeniable that this monitor is close to a floating image when looking at it from the user’s perspective.
The thin bezel would also allow for putting two of these next to one another, with minimal distraction from the bezel separation.
When it’s ON, the image quality is stunning. We saw it in a demo room that was very bright, and the colors still “popped.” Obviously demos footage and videos are created to accentuate this, but we see most monitor demos under similar conditions.
The 600 NIT brightness is much higher than regular PC monitors, and it serves two purposes. First, this makes the image clear and colorful, even in brighter environments. Secondly, HDR requires a high level of brightness between 600 and 1000+. This monitor is certified under the VESA DisplayHDR 600 standard (600 NIT bright, 99% BT.709 color coverage, 10-bit image processing, 8-bit colors with 2-bit dithering).
Because the Dell 27 USB-C Ultrathin Monitor is so slim, Dell had to use a Corning Iris Glass instead of the usual Polymer light guide plate (LGP) used on most monitors. This piece of equipment ensures the light coming from one of the edges of the screen is evenly distributed across the surface.
Typically, the LGP is allowed to expand and contract a bit due to the heat generated by the monitor. However, this is not possible in ultrathin design without air gaps between the LGP and the LCD matrix, and that’s why Glass is a better LGP in this case: because it does not expand.
The USB-C connectivity delivers power and image signals, making this monitor very convenient to connect to a compatible USB-C laptop for charge+display. The monitor can tilt up (21 degrees) and down (5 degrees) but is not designed to rotate or go in portrait mode.
In the back, there’s a 3.5mm audio out port to carry the USB-C audio signals to an analog speaker, a USB-C (+Power Delivery 45W) port, a full-size HDMI connector and two full-size USB-A ports (one has a 7.5W charging capability)
