Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+ Could Come With ‘Intelligent Scan’ Feature

With Apple adopting facial recognition as a new security system for their iPhones, it has led to rumors that other handset makers could be looking to adopt the technology as well. Now it seems that Samsung could have a hybrid of sorts in the works which combines iris scanning with facial recognition.

This is according to a report from XDA in which Senior Member mweinbach discovered the potential feature in an APK teardown of the Settings app in the Oreo beta for the Galaxy Note 8. According to the teardown, it makes mention of a feature called “Intelligent Scan”, which combines both iris and face scanning at the same time.

This is said to offer up improved accuracy and security and can be used in low or very bright light, the former which some have complained Face ID isn’t particularly good at, despite the fact that Apple claims that it works even at night. We’re not sure what kind of tech Samsung is using for the Intelligent Scan feature at this point in time.

Presumably the iris scanner will be retained, but whether or not they’ll be using tech similar to Face ID for the face scanning portion remains to be seen. Either way we’ll find out soon enough as the Galaxy S9, S9+ will be officially announced on the 25th of February.
