With the Nintendo Switch having the ability to transform itself into a portable gaming console, many questioned what this could mean for the future of Nintendo’s handhelds like the 3DS. Nintendo had stated that they expect these consoles to exist side-by-side, and sure enough it looks like they are sticking to their word.
This is because Nintendo has recently announced their latest handheld gaming console in the form of the Nintendo 2DS XL. Granted this isn’t an update to the 3DS console, but we guess the fact that Nintendo is still churning out handhelds indicates that they are not planning to replace this particular market segment with the Switch anytime soon.
According to Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO, “This new addition to Nintendo’s portable hardware line demonstrates our commitment to the hand-held market.” In terms of specs and features, the 2DS XL will be capable of playing games for the 3DS and DS, with the main difference being that they will be only playable in 2D.
