Huawei Exec Thinks 4GB RAM Is Plenty For A Smartphone

For a brief moment it seemed that there could be a race in trying to cram as much RAM into a smartphone as possible, with rumors suggesting that we could be looking at phones with 6-8GB of RAM. However to date there aren’t that many phones that have gone over 4GB, with the OnePlus 3T being one of the more notable handsets in recent times with 6GB of RAM.

It is clear that too much RAM is excessive for the most part since most users probably don’t run very intensive apps, and Huawei seems to believe that as well. In a post on Weibo (via PhoneArena), Huawei Exec Lao Shi expressed his opinion that 4GB of RAM is plenty as far as smartphones are concerned.

He goes on to note that handsets like the iPhone 7 perform just fine with 2GB of RAM (3GB for the iPhone 7 Plus), so at the end of the day it really boils down to how the software is optimized for the hardware. In fact we’ve seen in various speed tests how the iPhone 7 has managed to beat out the competition that allegedly packed better hardware.

So what this means is that if you were hoping to see Huawei phones with 6-8GB of RAM in the future, Lao Shi’s post would suggest that the company thinks that 4GB is plenty, and that extra RAM won’t do much more other than jacking up the price of phones. Of course this could change in the future, but in the meantime maybe you shouldn’t hold your breath.
