Synaptics Unveils All-In-One Facial & Fingerprint Recognition System

Synaptics is a company that some of you guys might have heard of before. If you haven’t, they are a company that specializes in making fingerprint recognition systems which has found its way into quite a few mobile devices over the past few years. This year at CES 2017, they are back with a new all-in-one facial and fingerprint recognition system (via MacRumors).

So far facial and fingerprint recognition systems have typically existed separate from each other. Like with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 that had iris and fingerprint recognition, you could choose to login using your fingerprint or scan your eyes, but Synaptics’ latest system will let you do both at once for enhanced security.

Developed together with KeyLemon, a company who specializes in continuous camera-based facial recognition, they are calling this new system the biometric fusion engine. According to Synaptics, “The Synaptics multi-factor fusion engine combines authentication scores from multiple biometrics to determine verification. This increases overall system security as both fingerprint and facial factors have to meet minimum threshold requirements before authentication. In addition, the fusion engine improves usability as lower individual verification thresholds still result in greater security.”

It sounds like a great idea but unfortunately at the moment, it is unclear as to who might be looking to incorporate the technology into their devices, but we’ll keep an eye out all the same.
