Apple Watch To Be Used In Stroke Prevention Study

Pharmaceutical powerhouse Johnson & Johnson announced that it will be teaming up with Apple in an effort to improve diagnosis and early detection of Atrial Fibrillation.

Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is an irregular and often rapid heart rate that can increase your risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. It is responsible for 1/3 of all documented strokes.

AFib is responsible for approximately 130,000 deaths and 750,000 hospitalizations each year in the US alone.

The study is set to begin later this year and will involve patients 65 years and older. The multi-year research program will measure the accuracy of Apple’s wearable device to provide notifications on irregular heart rhythm as well as provide feedback on the effectiveness of certain medications.

In a statement from Apple COO Jeff Williams, it was revealed that many users are already benefitting from the watches capabilities.

We are receiving thank you letters daily from Apple Watch wearers who are discovering they have AFib. We want a deeper understanding about outcomes and prevention associated with early detection. We are excited to work with Johnson & Johnson, which has a long history and expertise in cardiovascular disease.”

The implications of this study could be monumental as reports suggest that more than 30% of AFib causes don’t get reported until its too late.
